ENG: On June 2016, just on the international music and yoga day I had the priviledge to introduce officially my guruji Sunanda Sharma, Indian classical singer, to the audience of my hometown Padova (Italy). Sunanda Sharma was born on the foothills of Himalayas and was brought up in Punjab, but then, after learning music since childhood with her father Sudarshan Sharma, she was chosen by her guru, the legendary Padmavibhushan and "Queen of thumri" Girija Devi, who took her with her in Kashi to groom her in the Banaras gharana tradition

ITA. Nel giugno 2016, esattamente per la giornata internazionale della musica e dello yoga, ho avuto il privilegio di presentare ufficialmente la mia maestra di canto indiano, Sunanda Sharma, al pubblico della mia città natale, Padova, presente numeroso alla bella sala Paladin del Municipio per l'occasione. Sunanda è nata in un paesino ai piedi dell'Himalaya e cresciuta in Punajab, ma poi, dopo avere appreso i fondamenti del canto classico indiano dal padre Sudarshan Sharma, è stata scelta dalla leggendaria cantante di Benares Girija Devi, considerata la "Regina della thumri", che l'ha portata con sé a Kashi per formarla nello stile vocale della scuola (gharana) di Benares.

ENG. Sunanda spent long years with her guruma serving her with devotion and learning all the subtleties of her style according to the guru-shishya parampara system and she became, as Appaji says, the artiste who received her complete repertoire. She is gifted with an extremely expressive voice grounded in perfect taleem and became also one of the most interesting artistes of the newer generation. This is how she's been invited to teach in the most prestigious instituitions in India and the West, like SOAS and the Royal Academy of Music in London, to teach classical vocal music and some of the typical genres from Benares which are seldom taught anywhere else, especially in the West.

ITA. Sunanda ha trascorso lunghi anni con la sua maestra servendola con devozione e apprendendo ogni sottigliezza del suo stile secondo il sistema educativo tradizionale indiano detto guru-shishya paramapara (tradizione di maestro in allievo), è così divenuta, come la sua stessa maestra afferma, l'unica cantante ad averne ereditato l'intero repertorio. E' dotata di una voce estremamente espressiva forgiata da una preparazione perfetta e è divenuta anche una delle artiste più interessanti della nuova generazione. Per questo viene invitata a insegnare nelle istituzioni più prestigiose in india e in Occidente, come il SOAS e la Royal Academy of Music di Londra, canto classico e alcuni dei generi vocali tipici di Benares raramente insegnati altrove, soprattutto in Occidente.

ENG.On the occasion of my invitation for an intensive workshop in Padova a couple of years ago, Sunanda ji held a lecture on how the Indian performer relates to his/her music, on her music tradition and the various vocal genres from the Benares gharana, such as khyal (in rag Kedar), thumri, tappa, dadra and bhajan, which she has all briefly but richly demonstrated to a spellbound audience. I'm now posting a private audio recording by a workshop partecipant in the audience, because I believe it gives a rare chance for those who could not attend that day to hear a live demonstration of all these genres and the differences between them. The lecture is in English with an Italian translation by me, I am sure it will be interesting and appreciated from those who were not present. Proprio in occasione del mio invito per un workshop intensivo sul canto indiano a Padova un paio di anni fa, Sunanda ha tenuto questo incontro su come i musicisti indiani si relazionano con la loro musica, sul suo stile di canto e sui vari generi di canto di Benares come il classico khyal (in raga Kedar), ma anche i semiclassici thumri, tappa, dadra, bhajan che ha brevemente, ma riccamente, dimostrato tutti per la gioia del pubblico. Pubblico ora una registrazione audio amatoriale realizzata da una allieva del workshop perché penso sia una rara occasione anche per chi non era presente quel giorno, di sentire dal vivo una dimostrazione di tutti questi generi vocali e le differenze che li contraddistinguono.
